Summer comes to a close on the Vineyard with three festivals to attend

Labor Day Weekend on the Vineyard is filled with events, complete with celebrations of wind and jazz. Though there are no events held on Monday, Labor Day itself, there is no shortage of events to attend before white pants go out of style for the season.

Martha’s Vineyard Jazz and Blue’s Summerfest

It’s not too late to plan for a weekend that will be all that jazz. The festival opens Thursday, Sept. 3 with a free concert at Oak Bluffs’ Union Chapel, featuring Jazz Giants 25 and under. Talent such as Jazzmeia Horn, Liza Colby, and The Julius Rodrigues Ensemble will perform starting at 6:30 p.m.

Friday continues on with performances from 6:30 – 10 p.m. at Edgartown’s Old Whaling Church. Grammy award winning artist Lisa Fischer will perform, as well as sax extraordinaire Sharel Cassity, and Andrea and James Rohlehr and the AndJam Band.

Saturday adds in some girl power and features the Women of the World ensemble, who perform music in 29 different languages, followed by the Sage All Ladies Jazz and Blues.

Finally, Sunday wraps up with Nnenna Freelon, jazz pianist Yayoi Ikawa, and jazz gospel violinist Kersten Stevens.

Additionally, the festival boasts a free reception open to the public with desserts and drinks from 3-10 p.m., Friday through Sunday.

Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival

The second festival of the weekend celebrates the end of summer by honoring the wind on Saturday Sept. 5 from 10:30 a.m to 4 p.m.Throughout the day, the event in Oak Bluffs’ Ocean Park will offer kite making and flying, along with competitions and prizes.

The morning hours – 10:30 a.m. to noon will feature kite making for children, followed by kite flying for children from noon to 1 p.m.Teens can fly kites between 1 and 2 p.m., followed by the adults from2 – 4 p.m. All are welcome to fly kites after dusk.

This family-friendly event is perfect to bring a picnic to and enjoy the beautiful weather as summer comes to a close.

Vineyard Artisans Annual Summer Festival

Close out the weekend with a celebration of the Vineyard’s artisans on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. in West Tisbury’s Grange Hall. From weavers, furniture, pottery, stained glass, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, quilts and clothing, to sea glass and handmade books, the third festival of the weekend has much to offer. Engage the artists by enjoying demonstrations offered throughout the day, and enjoy great food alongside great local art.
