Remember our old friend Don Orsillo?
D.O. was unceremoniously dumped last year after 15 seasons as NESN’s Red Sox play-by-play man. When the news broke in August, it sent The Nation into an uproar — over 65,000 signed an online petition to keep Orsillo in Boston. The Melrose native had become a beloved member of the Fenway Faithful family as many viewers and fans enjoyed the unscripted banter and boob-grab laughter between Orsillo and his NESN analyst partner Jerry Remy. While it was sad to see D.O. go, we’ll always have the pizza throw.

“I really don’t know, still [why NESN didn’t re-sign him],” Orsillo told WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford in January. “I’ve read things in articles and things that have been said. I’ve heard terms like ‘upgrade’ and ‘re-energize’ and both really kind of upset me, because obviously we had a lot of energy and I felt like we were quite good. Over the last 15 years and over the last five years, especially, with the way that we did have so many fill-ins, NESN’s No. 1 product is Red Sox baseball, and I felt like it was done very well over that period. Unfortunately, they didn’t agree. And so that was a big surprise.”
Orsillo will be replaced on NESN by former Red Sox radio network play-by-play man Dave O’Brien this season. New Hampshire Tim Neverett takes over for O’Brien in the radio booth.

As for Don, he signed a six-year deal to join the San Diego Padres broadcast team on FOX Sports San Diego and will replace the legendary Dick Enberg — who enters his final year as the Pads play-by-play man — in 2017.

For the 2016 season, Orsillo will be calling Padres games on both radio and TV.
And as a reminder, do not — DO NOT — feel sorry for Mr. Don Orsillo who has made quite the upgrade over the old RemDawg in the Southern California broadcast booth.
