The scene: 2004 Red Sox 10-year anniversary celebration at Fenway Park on May 28, 2014. Dan Roche interviews Kevin Millar, Pokey Reese, Kevin Youkilis and Orlando Cabrera.
This is one of the greatest stories of that world championship year. When I was told this story by someone on the inside the organization, I was told among the players doing shots of Jack Daniels before every game were Theo Epstein himself and ESPN’s Peter Gammons although Gammons leaves his name out of it in the story he wrote on ESPN.com.
Millar: It wasn’t as if guys were drunk
“Kevin Millar is forever enthusiastic, ever honest.”
“But this time,” the Red Sox first baseman said, “I wish I’d never opened my mouth.”
During an appearance on Fox’s “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” on Friday, Millar said that Red Sox players did shots of Jack Daniel’s before Game 6 of the American League Championship Series against the Yankees. And because it worked, Millar said, they did it before every game through the World Series.
Millar made similar comments on Boston’s WBZ-TV (Ch. 4) with Dan Roche.
So here’s to you Chicago, drink up!
