Mike’s Pastry vs. Modern Pastry
If your familiar with Hanover Street you know theirs only 2 places to get the best pastry’s around the North End, and that’s Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry. I see the competition between the two due to the long lines coming out of both Pastry shops but the question is which one is better?
Mike’s Pastry has been around for 68 years and has many generations that have walked through those doors. The ongoing legacy of Annette and Mike and their ancestors lives on through these delicious creations. At the age of 90 Mike Mercogliano the “Mike” passed away over a year ago, but the store is still standing and baking on.
Modern Pastry is an award winning family owned bakery. It has been around for over 70 years with three generations of master chefs and over 150 years of authentic old world methods that creates these hand made products. Modern Pastry is expanding their store to the building next door creating more space for even more pastry’s and goodies.
When asking people which shop they go to and like better I found out that more people who are from Boston go to Modern Pastry. It’s more of a generic place that the locals love and know. Just like in Modern’s bio they state that they love seeing their customers growing up and bringing their generations of family to the store. So that leaves Mike’s with more of a tourist audience.
With the question still standing on which is better I just had to try a cannoli from both. After a tough decision I came to the conclusion that they are both amazing pastry shops with energetic employees happy to fulfill your sweet tooth craving. You feel like family when you walk into both places always leaving with a smile and frosting on your face. So its up to you depending on what line you want to wait in and if you want a more local or tourist feel.
