With the exception of Olivia Culpo and Danny Amendola, celebrity breakups don’t usually phase me. But when Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan announced their separation via Instagram, my heart sank. After posting the news on my Snapchat story, I received a ton of support from friends who felt my same sense of heartache. With each reply, I realized that the recent Step Up split strikes a chord with our generation—a chord that most celebrity breakups miss.

My obsession with Channing and Jenna, (mostly Channing) started like every middle-schooler’s interest began—with the release of the 2006 movie Step Up. In the eyes of a young girl, Nora (Jenna) and Tyler (Channing) were the coolest and best-looking TV couple to date. In 2009, when the two co-stars married, TV love came to life. Channing and Jenna were proof that love existed! So for myself and many others, the Step Up split goes beyond the surface of two celebrities calling it quits. Their separation symbols our loss of innocence and hope. It has turned our once pure and bright perception of love, gray.

One heartache is enough for me, but Barstool’s “Chicks in the Office” predict the next celebrity break-up to be Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Let’s pray this doesn’t happen. On the bright side, Channing Tatum is single now, ladies!
